Motorola targets youths with new phone
Motorola is to unveil a cut-price colour phone in Ireland, appealing to the youth market with features like a DJ-style "mixing desk" to create ringtones.
In a preview of the C350 at its launch event on Wednesday, Motorola executives demonstrated a number of customisable features on the phone, including the screensavers, wallpaper and its "Motomixer" tool for manipulating the phone's polyphonic ringtones.
Accessible from the Media Centre option on the phone's menu, the Motomixer lets the customer choose a base track of 'dance' or 'blues, and then use the keypad to tweak the synth, bass, drums and flute tones. The customer can then name the track and set it as a ringtone.
"The phone is mainly for people in the 18-24 age range who want to stand out...but this can also be a low-end business handset," said Christopher Stewart, business development manager for Motorola in Ireland. He said the phone was expected to retail for between EUR29 and EUR69 for post-paid customers, or EUR149 to EUR189 for pre-pay customers, depending on the incentives offered by the operator. All three operators are expected to offer the phone, which should be available by the first week in June.
